I joined Honeywell with a goal of building a design system for the purpose of aligning multidisciplinary teams across multiple geo's. I had the opportunity to apply the design system to a number of connected building product offerings that use Honeywell IoT data services to display critical realtime environmental and mechanical building information on a dashboard for building managers and maintenance workers.
To better understand the needs of building managers and maintenance workers we used an observational research technique called "fly on the wall" following them in their day to day tasks.
Additional discussions uncovered challenges reading vital dashboard information and notifications in a variety of indoor and outdoor settings.
With this information I knew I wanted to build an adaptive color system generated (based on) colors contrast-ratio.
The result was a readable, accessible UI solution able to change based on the users environment and device brightness settings.
Luckily a lot of this can now be achieved through the use of open source tools like Leonardo:
Sketch, Abstract, InVision, Zeplin
